How To Create a New Project¶
New projects usually do not have a working directory. Before any analyses, it is necessary to initially create a new working directory and then proceed with the project in WindPRO. With information regarding the area of interest, environmental constraints, land ownership (fundiary information), wind data, and resource maps imported into WindPRO, it is possible to perform micrositing analyses and run Flowin simulations.
Initial Project Organization¶
- Go to :
\\\\Ventos\\\\Projetos\\\\ - Copy and Paste
\\\\\\\_Pastapadraoand rename it with the name of the site of interest. Place it on the correct geography subfolder!!!This is the project working directory!!! - Download the data (archives/docs/geo info) sent in the request e-mail.
- Organize the received data in the subfolders inside the working directory.
Creating WindPro File¶
For the initial resource assessment and layout development, it is necessary to create a new project in WindPro. Here we are assuming the user is a bit familiar with the program.
- Open WindPro and create a new file
- Save the project as
\\\\\\\*ProjectName\\\*\\\\\\\*ProjectName\\\*.wpo- Use the town\City\State name for the Project Name, no dates or Country names - in the working directory, inside theWindProsubfolder. Ignore the next window for the project template by just clickingOk - Right-click on the project tree and select Load structure
- Choose the file
default\\\_layer\\\_structure.wlslocated in the windpro subfolder inside working directory
Adding Terrain Information¶
For the terrain elevatin data, the time usually uses NADASEM. The color scale is not rigorsly the same, but to keep everything organized, configure also the color scale as described below. If one user ends up being most responsible for one project, there is no harm in swithcing some basic preferences if the overall organization is kept.
- Click on Line object → Purpose: Height / contour lines → Online Data → Select NASADEM → Next.
- Configure the size of the area to be displayed and the contour line spacing (default 10 m).
- Edit the object and configure the color scale (e.g.: 10 colors).
Adding Constraints¶
the time uses constrains as indivudual files, one for each groupd/class/variable of constrains. This is important to allow flexibility for the YAM and DEV to turn on and off areas without the need for the GEO time to create a new constrain file.
- If the files are in kmz format, convert the
.kmzfile of the area of interest to shapefile (QGIS or online). - In the project tree — right-click on the Area folder.
- Load layer and activate the new layer.
- Add location in WTG areas and click Import — pay attention to the UTM zone.
- Rename using the constraint name
- Import the constraint shapefile
- Repeat for all → Note issues or questions for clarification via email;
Adding Resource Map¶
The resource map is a .wrg file; it must be requested from the Vórtex platform. Save the file in the Maps folder inside the working directory and load it in windpro.
Adding Satelite Data (+ certified MM or AMA MM data)¶
For new projects it is necessary to use satellite data and, if available, combine it with existing AMA towers or certified towers from third parties. If these data are available, it is first necessary to find the official coordinates from measurement documents. In the case of Meteo Object for satellite data, the position and information are downloaded automatically, so you just have to go online after clicking the Meteobject icon in WindPRO. Follow the steps below:
- Add a MeteoObject at some place in the area of interest;
- Go to Go online → Search for ERA5 grid points closest to the area of interest;
- Click on ...
- Go to the Datasetup tab and click on AutoCreate and then on Clear and load all
- Check time zone
- Verify if the full time series has been imported
- Check direction and mean wind speed to guide the layout
Adding Measured Data¶
For ongoing development projects or M\&A projects that shared wind measurements, the data has to be imported to WindPRO.
- If M\&A, just download the information and organize it in
\\\*ProjectName\\\*\\\\1. Received Data\\\\4. Wind data - If the measured data is Voltalia's property, it's necessaire to download the pre-filtered data from SQL. To do that see [xxx]
- With data timeseries already in .csv format and orgonized inside the project directory, go to WindPRO.
- Add a MeteoObject at some place in the area of interest;
- Go to Go Time Series → Search for csv file with the data of interest and load it;
- Click on ...
- Go to the Datasetup tab and click on AutoCreate and then on Clear and load all
- Check time zone
- Verify if the full time series has been imported
- Check direction and mean wind speed to guide the layout
Ideally, wind data obtained through measurements is used for micrositing. However, recent/new projects do not have met masts installed. For these cases, the first estimates are obtained using satellite data and nearby certified towers or AMA masts. The wind resource map is always calibrated with the available wind data.
